Five women accused the comic of exposing himself to them and performing a sex act. In a stunning public statement released to the media, Louis CK says it’s all true.
Here’s an excerpt:
“These stories are true. At the time, I said to myself that what I did was okay because I never showed a woman … without asking first, which is also true. But what I learned later in life, too late, is that when you have power over another person, asking them to look at … isn’t a question. It’s a predicament for them. The power I had over these women is that they admired me. And I wielded that power irresponsibly. I have been remorseful of my actions. And I’ve tried to learn from them. And run from them. Now I’m aware of the extent of the impact of my actions. I learned yesterday the extent to which I left these women who admired me feeling badly about themselves and cautious around other men who would never have put them in that position…”
The admission left Louis CK’s legions of fans struck speechless. They didn’t want to believe their hero could be guilty of the things people were saying about him. These people just had to be jealous, or there were extenuating circumstances or … something … But the “something” turned out to be “it’s all true.”
CK went on to apologize for his actions — to the women, to his family, his fans and to the people he worked with who will be impacted by these revelations. “I didn’t think that I was doing any of that because my position allowed me not to think about it. There is nothing about this that I forgive myself for. And I have to reconcile it with who I am… I have spent my long and lucky career talking and saying anything I want. I will now step back and take a long time to listen.”
Given the responses many have had to other recent allegations of a sexual nature, there’s a good chance CK will be listening to a blistering commentary for a good long time. In the meantime, CK sees consequences already. His latest movie premiere was canceled, and his scheduled appearance on The Late Show was also shelved. The movie may be released at a later date, but it won’t be anytime soon.
So, what’s next for Louis CK? It’s impossible to say at this moment. For the foreseeable future, his long and successful run has crashed and burned.
